ATTN: RELEASE STATEMENT MAY 26, 2022
I was driving home to Michigan last Spring, wondering what on God’s Green Earth™ I was gonna do. I couldn’t spend another year with my head buried in my computer making another album alone. No record label awaited my next project (this is still the case), there was no reputation to uphold (this is also still the case), no money to be made (and none was), but I needed to breathe, to make music with humans again. Somewhere in Pennsylvania, “Magical Mystery Tour” came on, and the sun appeared cinematically out from behind the clouds. It was so beautiful, I cried.
I immediately called drummer Billy Harrington, and after an hour of nerding out about The Beatles we agreed to meet at Big Sky Recordings in Ann Arbor. Billy was half the rhythm section of one of my favorite local bands growing up called The Fever Tongues. They made one EP and it was sick. The other half of that rhythm section was bassist Joe Dart, now of Vulfpeck. It is an unspeakably profound honor to announce that this rhythm section of two of my musical heroes was reunited to record the next Magic Toaster project with me.
Two days were booked at the studio. I thought I’d get one song recorded on day one and do the vocal on day two. I wrote my ass off for a week leading up to the session on that one song– if I was gonna get to record with the big boys I had better show up with something good. The basic tracks for that song were done within the first couple hours of the session and suddenly before me was the bone-crunching question: “Ok, what else you got?”
As I frantically searched through my voice memos looking for something acceptable, my brother Oren walked in. There was an organ sitting in the corner. I asked Geoff, the mastermind behind the board at Big Sky how long it’d take to get that thing mic’d up. “Not long at all,” he said excitedly and thus Oren joined the band.
Billy, Joe and Oren were gracious enough to come back the next day, and we ended up with five songs. I spent my summer finishing the vocals, overdubs, and mixes with Geoff, and I could not be more pleased with the result. Marty Gray assistant engineer MVP, Charlie Burg surprise “oohs” with Oren and me on Track 1, Jim Kissling on the mastering.
